The Challenge:
Johnathan purchased an old barn property that had been renovated in the late 1990s. The structure, originally covered in white render and equipped with white plastic windows, was in need of a complete transformation to revive its charm and functionality. Beneath the render, pebble dash and damaged brickwork presented additional challenges.
The Solution:
To bring this barn back to life, Johnathan set out to combine traditional and modern elements using locally sourced and sustainable materials. Key elements of the renovation included:
- Reclaimed Local Brick: After removing the pebble dash, the damaged brickwork was skimmed with reclaimed brick to restore the base of the building.
- Welsh Larch Cladding: The upper portion of the barn was clad with Welsh Larch, sourced from The Larch Cladding Company. The cladding was installed using a batten system with flat boards to create a traditional barn aesthetic.
- Reclaimed Welsh Slate: Johnathan replaced the roof himself, using locally sourced reclaimed slate to maintain authenticity.
- Locally Fabricated Gates: Metal gate frames were filled with shadow gap larch for a lightweight, functional, and visually appealing design.
- Lead Facing & Industrial Details: Lead facing on the gable end paired with aluminium windows and Lindab galvanised steel guttering (with oversized downpipes) added a unique mix of industrial and traditional finishes.
Why Welsh Larch?
Initially considering cedar cladding, Johnathan’s interior joinery expert recommended The Larch Cladding Company. After visiting the mill to meet the team, view samples, and see how the timber was processed, Johnathan opted for Welsh Larch. Its local sourcing and sustainable credentials aligned with his commitment to supporting local businesses and using environmentally friendly materials.
Planning Approval:
Johnathan’s detailed planning application, highlighting the use of reclaimed local slate, brick, and Welsh Larch, was well received by the local authority, contributing to a swift approval process.
The Outcome:
The barn has been completely transformed. The combination of reclaimed materials and expertly installed Welsh Larch cladding has given the property a timeless, traditional barn look. The use of sustainable materials has not only enhanced the building’s aesthetic but also supports local craftsmanship and the environment.
Johnathan expressed his satisfaction with the Welsh Larch, saying he plans to let it age naturally to achieve the desired reddish hue before treating it to lock in that shade.
Key Highlights:
- Sustainability: Locally sourced materials, including Welsh Larch, reclaimed brick, and slate.
- DIY Installation: Johnathan and his team at Flintshire Roofing completed the cladding and other installations themselves, ensuring high-quality results.
- Customer Satisfaction: Johnathan was impressed with the service, professional advice, and the quality of the larch timber.
The barn renovation is nearly complete, with final touches like a cladded garage door in progress. This project stands as a testament to the beauty and practicality of Welsh Larch and the craftsmanship of local tradespeople.
