The Larch Cladding Company’s Timber in Corris Railway Restoration Projects

Introduction

The Corris Railway, located near Machynlleth in North Wales, has a rich history dating back to its original slate quarry operations. Today, the railway is maintained and operated by dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve and restore its historical artefacts. Recently, the volunteers at the Corris Railway undertook a unique restoration project, using timber supplied by The Larch Cladding Company.

Project Overview

The volunteers purchased pre-cut Welsh larch timber from The Larch Cladding Company to build a “man-rider.” These man-riders were historically used in slate quarries around North Wales, allowing miners to conduct line inspections and, if necessary, could be lifted and quickly removed from the tracks to allow trains to pass. The man-rider they constructed features a crank axle at the front, enabling the operator to pedal it along level tracks or coast down slopes using gravity, with a band brake on one axle for control.

The Process

  • Woodwork: The woodwork was meticulously handled by volunteers Bill Newton and Mark Salt. They used the larch timber to recreate the man-rider with historical accuracy.
  • Metalwork: The metal components of the man-rider were crafted by Adrian Britchford, another dedicated volunteer at the railway.
  • Previous Projects: This isn’t the first time Corris Railway volunteers have utilised timber from The Larch Cladding Company. The same team also built wagons, including the chassis of a loose slate wagon and a slate slab wagon, all constructed with our high-quality larch.

Outcome

The completed man-rider will soon be displayed in the Corris Railway Museum and brought out for demonstrations, allowing visitors to experience a piece of Welsh industrial history in action. The restoration has been a great success, and the team is already planning future projects using more Welsh larch from The Larch Cladding Company.

Testimonial

"Something different made from your larch, methinks!! We’ve already completed several wagons with your timber, and we’ll be back for more as we continue our restoration work." "
