Always Aim High: Events Hub & Café, Llanberis

Introduction

Always Aim High Events was established in 2010 by two friends, experienced in sport and its organisation, looking to bring different kinds of sporting events to Wales. The company has been guided by a clear set of principles: to be customer-led, community-focused, committed to showcasing the natural beauty of North Wales, and dedicated to promoting sustainable economic growth. The organisation now hosts over 20 major races each year across Wales, including triathlons, duathlons, trail runs, swims, and cycling events.

Project Overview

Always Aim High opened its first office at the Caban in Brynrefail in Snowdonia before expansion saw its relocation to Llangefni in Anglesey. In 2021, the company signed an agreement with Gwynedd County Council to develop a world-class events hub and café in Llanberis in the heart of the national park. Returning to its roots would allow the company to provide local, highly skilled jobs and upskilling opportunities for those living in the area seeking employment in the outdoor sector.

The Events Hub was constructed with support from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund due to the positive impact the project will have on the local economy and outdoor adventure industry in North Wales. The two-storey, multi-purpose space is now home to a warehouse, a multi-sport shop, a health and wellbeing café, and a training facility for event and outdoor specialists.

Design Goals

This impressive facility sits on the site of a former slate quarry in the heart of Snowdonia National Park with far-reaching views of the region’s most iconic landmarks, Yr Wyddfa and Llyn Padarn. It was essential that the building’s design integrated seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Central to this vision was the use of sustainably sourced Welsh larch cladding, which The Larch Cladding Company was proud to supply. The larch will weather over time, transforming its warm, natural character to cooler, silvery tones, helping the structure to settle into its environment.

Quality Materials

Through a comprehensive consultation with the client and principal contractor Celtic Heritage, we identified Welsh larch shadow gap as the most suitable profile for this project. We initially supplied 500 m² of larch shadow gap cladding, as well as additional PAR for the trim. To ensure the quality and efficacy of the product, we sourced the timber from local responsibly managed forests.

Project Highlights

As the project progressed, it became clear that more timber would be needed than had been originally anticipated. We were able to supply the additional quota rapidly to mitigate any delays. We maintained close coordination with Celtic Heritage to ensure the project was completed within the build deadlines.

The Larch Cladding Company was proud to support the development of this project and to contribute to a scheme dedicated to bringing both wellness and economic benefits to North Wales. It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Always Aim High, and we are grateful to have been selected as a trusted supplier.
